I am always concerned whether the food I eat is good fuel for my running, good for the environment as well as being tasty. Because Kallo specialise in organic, natural food, they do tick my boxes as a brand. I am already partial to their snacks as an on-the-go option, an easy party snack or something between meals.
Just as a personal preference I usually steer towards savoury snacks, so it’s slightly unfair to Kallo that I’m reviewing their sweet ones. This is especially true as I’m cutting down on cane sugar at the moment. When I do fancy something sweet I’d rather go for one of their plain rice & corn cakes topped with honey. Of course this isn’t an option on-the-go and, I’m going to face it, sugar cravings do get me from time to time, and in those cases I would consider buying their sweet flavours.
It’s also worth noting that they are low in calories, fat and salt and are also free from gluten containing ingredients. They’re suitable for vegans, use limited processing and, as they are whole grain, contain plenty of goodness.
Their Caramel flavour is delicious and absolutely fantastic with cream cheese for a naughty sugar and fat kick. For a low-fat option, yoghurt or crème fraiche topped with fresh fruit would also work extremely well.
The Blueberry & Vanilla flavour is also tasty and stupendous with cream cheese – and with a more unusual, perfumey taste they’d be a great party snack.
Both flavours currently retail at £1.79. For more information on Kallo’s whole range of rice cakes visit www.saykallo.com.
Many thanks to Kallo for the samples.
