Señor Ceviche, Kingly Court

With Shoryu, Pizza Pilgrims, The Rum Kitchen and other trendy eateries, Kingly Court off Carnaby is shaping up to be an exciting food destination. Señor Ceviche has taken up a residency there too. When I first heard about Señor Ceviche I thought it was a new big daddy site to Ceviche. It’s not, but it does share similarities in that both serve Peruvian food. Señor Ceviche is owned and run by Harry Edmeades who’s worked in some of Peru’s top ceviche restaurants.

Señor Ceviche is located on the first floor of the court. It’s bold and lively with a darkly lit, South American inspired interior. The food is not traditional Peruvian more a fusion of Spanish and Japanese. So if you’re after a more authentic experience this isn’t the place for you, but there are still plenty of nods to the cuisine.

Lemongrass Pisco Sour

A Lemongrass Pisco Sour lacks the lemongrass flavour, but gets the tastebuds going for what’s in store ahead. The Inca Trail Cocktail is a much better choice of cocktail though, as it’s sweeter and better balanced.

Dishes are served when ready on small sharing plates. The signature and namesake dish, Señor Ceviche is very refreshing and light. Now whilst I struggle with raw fish in general  (even if marinated in Tiger’s Milk), I can still appreciate the zesty flavours of the sea bream, plus there are enough non-raw elements in it for it to be enjoyable. A plate of Mr Miyagi Salmon, however, is a touch too far.

Pork Belly (Chicharonnes)

The Japanese influence is evident in the Nikkei Greens. It’s a beautiful dish, which benefits from the barbecued char on the greens and contrasting textures from the nuts. The standout dish is again Asian inspired with delicious cubes of Pork Belly (Chicharonnes) richly flavoured with soy.

L to R: Super Pollo, Aubergine Tempura,
Nikkei Greens and Mr Miyagi Salmon

Light and crisp Aubergine Picarones (tempura) are very moreish and the Chicken (Super Pollo), super tender and nicely charred. The Beef Heart (Anticucho de Corazon) is my least favourite, but mainly because of its texture and a side of Quinoa is pleasant. If you have space, you must end the meal with the Passion Fruit Cheesecake (Ta De Queso) – it’s truly wonderful.
