Restaurant Review: My Big Fat Greek – Dulwich (CLOSED)

It’s about time South London had a decent Greek restaurant and it’s arrived in the form of My Big Fat Greek – Dulwich. The family-friendly restaurant sits just around the corner from East Dulwich train station. I take a mate who is local to the area with me to sample the menu. With blue and white colours running through the interiors and gods adorning the walls, there’s no mistaking that this is a Greek inspired restaurant. It has a simple layout with a relaxing vibe.

Andy is the owner and our waiter for the evening and we quickly warm to his friendly banter. We actually find out quite a bit about him. He used to be in sales and marketing and this is his first foray into the restaurant biz.  There’s another restaurant in the family and that’s the My Big Fat Greek – Elephant & Castle branch, owned by Andy’s brother.

Calamari

Apart from the desserts they prepare the majority of the food on the premises and those that aren’t are bought from Greek/Cypriot suppliers. To start we share a selection of hot starters: wonderfully light, crisp calamari – so fresh and you get a decent amount, in fact, all portions are of a decent size. Perfectly fried and gooey halloumi – fat, juicy garlic Mediterranean prawns and a deep, rich, spicy sausage called pastourma that my friend is particularly keen on. With an opener like that I have high hopes for the mains. They don’t disappoint.

Moussaka

Moussaka is a dish I love, but I’ve had some dodgy greasy ones in the past – I have to try it here to see if it can redeem itself. And yes, it so does. A comforting and lovingly prepared homely dish that lives up to its godly surroundings – simply heavenly! My friend opts for the kleftiko – a slow-baked lamb shank with meat so tender that it falls off the bone and so packed full of flavour.

At this point we are beyond stuffed, but feel the meal wouldn’t be complete without dessert. So we try the baklava – sweet, sticky, flaky, pistachio goodness. Pop!

My Big Fat Greek – Dulwich is the kind of place where you feel relaxed enough to ask for a doggy bag if you so wish (I did), and you’ll want one too ‘cos the food is bountiful and banging. We leave with our belly’s full and souls happy. Starters average between £3.50-£5.50 and mains £10.50-£15.50. They also do take-away which pleases my friend immensely – I fear for both our waistlines!

Food I Fancy dined as guests. Many thanks for the fantastic food.

    • Yes, and will mention anything I feel didn’t work or wasn’t right. For example; the burnt dessert in the Nibblr review, or the bland crab starter at Tuttons, or the disastrous dessert at Gran Luchito Supper Club, or the lack of wine knowledge from staff at Daawat’s, or the overly sweet tagine from Cook Food. The list goes on…
