Let me introduce you to Brenda the Hen. I met her on Saturday whilst visiting my friend Amy in Arundel. Amy’s partner Roo runs a farm, Rookery Farm, who specialise in top notch, organic, free range eggs. Brenda doesn’t live on the farm, but roams freely in Roo’s back garden along with another bird, both are rescue hens. Brenda lays an egg a day and the other had only just started as she was attacked by a fox not that long ago and still a little traumised, so thought it better not to try and shove my camera/iPhone at her. She’s coming around now though and had laid her first egg that morning. Brenda, who I’m told might have been attacked by a fox too, was fully back on form and a bit of character, she was quite happy to pose for me as you can see – or is that a death stare?
Amy and I had a heavy night of boozing and general shenanigans, so when morning came we were a little delicate to say the least. Amy’s darling fella was so lovely that he treated us to scrambled eggs (courtesy of Brenda of course), bacon and toast. I prefer my eggs set or overcooked according to Roo (he likes his very runny), but he kindly cooked them just the way I like. my iPhone (note to self, get proper camera) doesn’t do the eggs justice, but they were a healthy, bright, orangey yellow and fresh. Just what you need in such fragile times.
Thanks for brekkie Brenda and Roo!
Random chicken fact:
So that the yoke does not stick to the egg shell, a mother hen turns its egg about 50 times each day.
