Takeaway Review: Deliverance (CLOSED)

On the days that I don’t feel like cooking a takeaway is the next best thing. If I’m already out ‘n’ about then I’d usually pick something up on the way home, but if I’m already home then it’d be a delivery. I probably have about fifty odd menus stashed in my cupboard drawer and unless I have a specific craving it can take me ages to decide what to eat. Of the numerous menus, I actually only order from a few, whittling it down to the best Indian and Chinese as these are my preferred takeaway meals.

A Deliverance menu popped through my letterbox recently and the stunning pictures of the food got me licking my chops. It’s a multi-cuisine food service with a newly opened kitchen in Herne Hill. The cuisine varies from Japanese, Indian, Chinese, American Grill, Thai, Italian and World Classics. I’ve mentioned elsewhere before that I always feel a bit apprehensive ordering from menus with such extremes in cuisine, but in this instance I was reassured to learn that an expert in that particular area prepares each. So, I was very keen to try.

Deliverance - Prawn Tikka Masala 1
Deliverance - salt and pepper ribs

How was it?
As the temptation was there to try multiple cuisines in one go I thought I’d go for it. Each portion came with a label saying which chef had cooked it – I thought this was a nice touch. My order went a follows:

Starter – salt and pepper ribs cooked by DA. It was OK but needed more seasoning, not enough salt or heat from the chilli.

Mains – prawn tikka masala with pilaf rice and a side of raita cooked by Tariq and Iza. This was extremely good – well spiced with a delicious creamy sauce. The pilau rice was also very good and had pieces of green beans, peas and carrots in it making it slightly different to the pilau rice that you usually get.

Dessert – banoffee pie made by Iza. It was absolutely amazing, loved it. A crunchy digestive base with a generous layer of banana and a velvety caramel sauce topped with a light fresh cream, set it off a treat. Delish!

Deliverance, delivered on all counts! I shall be eating from here again – I’m thinking Thai next time.

This meal would have been approx £25, but was courtesy of Deliverance.

  • I was really pleased when Deliverance opened its Herne Hill office, and we decided to order Thai and Indian one night a couple of weeks back. Jim liked his chicken tikka masala, and we both loved the Thai prawn crackers (it was the biggest bag I’ve ever seen of them), but my Thai prawn red curry was absolutely the worst takeaway I’ve ever eaten. I definitely wouldn’t order Thai from them again, but would try something else.

My only other quibble was the price. At £9.40 for my red curry, and £8.40 for Jim’s tikka masala, it all added up, at £22.50.

Plus, I’m not sold on the idea of adding a tip for your delivery person — I think that should be at your discretion when they deliver it, and not added to the bill. We felt it was passive-aggressive and a guilt-trip at the same time.

Saying all that, we’ll definitely give them another go — it’s great they have such a breadth of cuisines available.

  • You make a good point on the pricing. I’ve updated the post to include how much my meal would’ve cost. And at £25 for just me is a bit steep – it would def be a once in a while luxury, but I was generally overall really happy with the meal. Might not try the Thai next now though, maybe World Classics.

  • This takeaway sounds tremend, though I will not be trying Kat’s curry! Do they deliver to my neck of the woods? I may use them when I get the urge to eat solids…

  • Nomnomnom we need more decent quality takeaways like deliverance so that we can get good quality take out if were not feeling up to cooking if home late now and then! Why is it so hard to get decent quality healthy take-away food?
