Product Review: Healthier Cakes from Slim Sam’s Cakery

I was looking forward to getting my hands on Slim Sam’s healthy cakes, which are produced in Kent, by a company specialising in cakes made with less fat and sugar than a standard cake. The company supplies local Kent businesses and also sells the cakes through their own website.

They arrived all boxed up, by post and undamaged, which is a real plus for ordering online. My kids rushed excitedly to open the box and find the treasure inside, and they weren’t disappointed. The Berry, Jammy and Banana Cakes were nestling in their individual cups wrapped in cellophane and tied with ribbon.

The big decision was which ones to sample straight away and which to leave until the use by date; I popped a Jammy one in the freezer to sample at a later date. The kids started to open a Berry and a Jammy Cake, but horror of horrors they couldn’t work out how it came out of the cup! One said the cup should ‘pop up like a Smarties ice-cream’, the other said it ‘needs a tear strip on the side or could it be made in a bar shape?’ I saved the day by twisting the cake gently and it eased out of the cup – phew!

We started by looking at the outside appearance, which was simple but nice. Next we cut up the Berry and Jammy cakes, tasting and savouring as we discovered the hidden delights.

The Jammy one had a little strawberry on top, vanilla sponge and reduced sugar strawberry jam inside, which we liked the taste of. The Berry cake was topped with a fresh Blueberry with a vanilla sponge which was swirled with a berry sauce made using seasonal fruit: strawberry, raspberry, blueberries & blackberries. Overall this was our favourite one based on appearance and taste of all the cakes sampled.

A few days later we tried another Berry cake, it was still moist and nice to eat and also the Banana Cake, which was packed full of fresh banana, a hint of spice and was so light! It was so much better than the usual stodgy banana cake on sale in the shops. I defrosted the Jammy one for 3 hours as per instructions. Apart from the little strawberry deflating, the taste was just as good as the fresh cake.

We really enjoyed Slim Sam’s Cakery and would love to taste their other flavours of Ginger, Lemon and Coffee. By using mostly fresh produce Slim Sam’s Cakery has managed to create cakes with exquisite natural flavours, so we didn’t feel we were missing out on anything flavour wise despite less fat and sugar.
