Mustard is not only one of my favourite condiments (Dijon to be precise), but it’s also the namesake of a modern British brasserie in Brook Green. We visit on a Thursday evening, which is generally a busy part of the week for dining, yet the place is near empty. It’s nicely furnished, warm and inviting with a few tables outside if you fancy a spot of alfresco dining so at first glance it’s hard to see why the place is so quiet. Does the food ‘cut the mustard?’ Why yes, it’s bistro-style British cooking done well.

Devonshire Crab Salad
We order the Cornish Squid and Devonshire Crab Salad with chicory, wholegrain mustard and fennel for starters. Both dishes are good, the squid is lightly battered and crisp and the crab is fresh and tasty. Mains are also very satisfying. My friend has the slow-cooked Beef Brisket with carrots, fresh horseradish and mash, which looks unpretentious and homely. And my main is grilled Barnsley Lamb Chop with minted peas and sour cream mash. It’s a beast of a perfectly cooked chop, succulent and well seasoned. It really is superb and the mash is wonderfully creamy.

Almond and Orange Cake

Gooseberry and Gin Crumble
A dessert of Almond and Orange Cake with sour cream hits the spot, although it’s a little heavy to end the meal with and could’ve done with more orange flavour. Whilst the friend is totally happy with the Gooseberry and Gin Crumble with lavender scented custard.

Mustard
Overall my experience at Mustard was positive and I can see no visible or edible reason as to why it was so quiet on my visit. This lovely neighbourhood restaurant is worth checking out for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Starters are from £4.95, mains from £10.50 and desserts from £4.95.
Food I Fancy dined as a guest.
