Review: Pizza Union, Spitalfields

Slobbing on the sofa with TV remote in hand, is how like to roll when it comes to eating pizza. I hardly ever eat it out and to be honest, I very rarely order it in. I tend to buy it from the supermarket when needs must – I know, shock, horror.

Recently, Pizza Union, managed to tempt me off of that sofa and over east to their home in Spitafields. Admittedly, a 12 incher with the promise of a thin and crisp base – just how I like it – was the deal breaker.

The industrial and cool looking restaurant is bar-style and operates a counter service – there’s no being waited on here. Once you’ve ordered, you’re given a buzzer thingy, which I’ve never come across before, but quite liked the novelty of it. Then you go and sit on one of long wooden communal benches or on one of the few tables scattered around the sides, and wait for the buzz.

Just as you might be getting into some deep gossip with your mate, in no time at all the buzzer will flash – exciting! This indicates that your pizza is ready and to go up to counter to the collect the goods. In my case the Stagioni: cotto ham, pepperoni, mushrooms, artichokes and black olives with a pimping of additional n’djua. And my friend, the Giardino: spinach, artichoke, mixed peppers, olives and mushrooms with extra green chillies.

The base of the pizza is light and airy with a welcome slight chew and the toppings generous and well balanced. The star topping is undoubtedly the n’djua, with its punchy heat elevating the pizza from OK to good. My friend however, found the Giardino to be fresh, but boring, which could’ve been made more interesting if some of the ingredients had been cooked off in some other seasonings first.

Overall though, both were more than palatable but not enough to stray me again from my pizza slobbing ways. However, if after the pizzas you can handle some more carbs, then the Dough Ring filled with nutella and mascarpone is an absolute must – so indulgently naughty, but oh, so very nice!

Pizza Union is best to go for a quick bite and is actually excellent value for money. Pizzas are from £3.95 – £6.50 and additional toppings £1 each. They also offer a delivery service from deliveroo, which is available between 11am -12pm and 5pm – 11pm.
