I love fresh, healthy food but work in an art studio without a kitchen. It’s really cold in winter and at night so instant soups are what I resort to during long stretches of work. I consider them to be a guilty pleasure as they don’t fill me up and they taste like junk. But still, hot instant soups can be very useful in certain situations.
Grasshopper, who specialise in good-for-you instant products have conveniently noticed this gap in the market and have bought out a range of 100% natural instant soups, which are filling and hearty. They currently come in three flavours, Mushroom & Chives, Spicy Lentil & Coconut and Tomato & Basil.
The soups are surprisingly thick, thanks to the oatmeal base. As oatmeal is a high-protein grain, it fills you up and keeps you going but also gives the soups a comforting, home-made texture. I was also surprised how fresh they tasted and particularly liked the mushroom chunks in the creamy Mushroom & Chives pot.
Spicy Lentil & Coconut has a lovely coconutty taste and spicy flavour. Tomato & Basil contains cheese – so one for vegans to avoid. But it was, for sure, the best instant tomato soup I’ve tasted. I was impressed!
Yes, these are high quality instant soups and are definitely among the tastiest and most satisfying out there. To fill me up I’d need to have them with a large chunk of bread or have a few in a row, but being dry they’re very light to carry about. Excellent for a quick meal with just a kettle!
Grasshopper soups retail at £1.29 online from www.teamgrasshopper.com.
Thanks to Grasshopper for the samples.
