One of the best things about being a food blogger is meeting other food bloggers. Primarily because they share your passion for food so are far more likely to put up with your incessant chat about food. They’ll also understand your pain when trying to take photos in dimly lit restaurants, or in Winter when the window for taking photos in natural light shortens. Yes, my friends, the struggle is real.
I recently met fellow blogger Gavin Wren at an event where he mentioned that he was setting up a food photography class specifically tailored for bloggers. Cool idea I thought, then a few weeks later I received a lovely email inviting me to attend his very first class at Blogger Skills Academy. Well, as someone who sets the camera to ‘auto’ then points and shoots, it was a no-brainer for me to accept.
Goals
The class was a nine to five session on a Sunday, which I admit was an effort to head over to on my chill day, but it was totally worth it. The day flew by as the class was well paced with a decent amount of practical activities. Gavin is a patient and enthusiastic teacher, who certainly knows his stuff. Our aim for the day was to recreate one of his photos. After learning valuable technical knowledge and creative skills throughout the day, I reckon I nailed it with the ‘money shot’ above.

Whilst there are lots of photography courses out there, this one is designed by bloggers for bloggers and teaches you how to take a great food photo in a fun environment with decent food and drinks thrown in. I now also know what some of the other settings and functions do on the camera, which makes all the difference.
I attended the Simple Food Photography, but there are other classes available such as ‘using artificial light’ with more in the pipeline.
