I’m a fan of Supper Clubs but let’s face it, they can be hit or miss, because dining with strangers is unpredictable. EatAbout aim to up the hit factor by offering a solution in which a chef will host you in the privacy of their home or desired location (one is based within a vintage Citroen HY camper) and who you dine with is totally up to you. Sounds good, no?
The chefs vary from non-professional to Michelin starred – you’ll see an
ex-MasterChef finalist in the mix too. Basically, you book the menu you most like the look of with prices currently starting from £23.10 per guest. I got to experience the London Lobster and Seafood Feast in the company of fellow bloggers: Rosana, Alexandra and Lauren.

Canadian Lobster Thermidour
Co-founders Felix Bråberg and Philip Källberg are our charming hosts with trained chef Felix taking the helm in the kitchen. These guys are so dedicated to providing the freshest of produce that they were up at the crack of dawn that morning sourcing the seafood from Billingsgate Market. A Swedish flag hangs proudly in the dining area giving a nod to their Scandinavian roots. A beautifully laid table sits in the centre of the candlelit room setting a sophisticated tone for the evening.
A decadent meal ensues starting with juicy plump Oysters with a Mignonette sauce. Eatabout is BYOB and prior to the evening Felix had helpfully suggested some wines to go with the meal – an Alsatian Riesling or dry Chablis. I end up bringing a Sancerre, which goes just as well.

Saffron Fish Soup

Apples in Rosemary Sauce with Ice Cream
Perfectly cooked Lobster Thermidor follows with generous chunks of lobster encased in a delicate sauce with an inviting tang from the Gruyère cheese. Saffron Fish Soup is up next with pieces of wild salmon – it’s full of flavour yet light and moreish. The meal ends with Apples in Rosemary Sauce with Ice Cream. I’m sceptical about the rosemary, but I needn’t be – it works and it’s good.

I write this a few weeks after the event and memories of the evening still puts a smile to my face. It was full of laughter with great food, great hosts and great company. Now I can’t guarantee that your evening will be as crazy with laughter as mine, you might not even want it to be. But, whatever you are looking for an evening spent in a homely setting with quality food, people you know and someone else cooking and cleaning up after you, will always be a winner for me.
