When I think of the Japanese restaurant Nobu, two things spring to mind, Black Cod in Miso and celebs, more specifically Boris Becker and his infamous romp in the cupboard (which actually turned out to be in the stairwell). So I was quite excited when I received an invite by Alaska Seafood to attend an event there, what with the possibility of at least one of those thoughts materilising.
It turned out Becker wasn’t there on the day, shame, but there was a celeb spot; one of the sisters from All Saints – the one that isn’t married to Liam Gallagher – Natalie Appleton. And I did get to try the Black Cod, but not the infamous blackened one with miso. It was however, stunningly tasty and deliciously flaky.
Alaska Seafood are the seafood suppliers to Nobu and their ethos is all about sustainability. In fact, the whole state is big on sustainability, as Alaska is the only state to have a mandate for sustainable seafood written into its Constitution.

The fish served was, as expected, elegantly showcased by the Nobu chefs. I’ve mentioned a few times of my dislike for raw fish, but if I was going to eat it anywhere, what better place than Nobu? Primed with several glasses of Saint Clair Sauvignon Blanc, 2012, both of the two Salmon Sashimi dishes went down rather well.
One of them could have done without the tomato with it, but otherwise I didn’t squirm and found it suprisingly enjoyable. King Crab was a delight and the Steamed Cod vibrantly aromatic. A sorbet dessert with an apple puree, was a chilling, fruity end to a conscious free dining experience.

One thing I was amazed to learn at the event, was that all the fish we ate had previously been frozen. You really couldn’t tell. I eat frozen fish from time-to-time and the quality has been nowhere near as good as what we had – compliments to the chefs and produce of course.

Many thanks to Alaska Seafood for the invite.
