It was my friend Salome’s birthday and as such she wanted to go to one of her favourite Mexican restaurants, Wahaca. She’d been raving about it for a while, but I’d not managed to make it to any. So what better occasion to go for my first time. We were a party of seven – word of warning, if you’re a group this size arrive with all members in tow and get there early, as they don’t do bookings and queues can end up running outside along the street – it’s easy to see why. The place is bright, buzzing and simply brilliant. The décor was tastefully done with a Mexican hint. I’ve never been to Mexico, but inside it felt that this may possibly give me a little taste of it and I haven’t even got to the food yet.
What to eat?
I wanted to try it all. In the end I figured the best thing to go for would be the ‘Wahaca Selection’ and I shared this with one of the party members, Tim. The selection consisted of: 3 pork pibil tacos, 3 winter vegetable tacos, 1 large huitlacoche quesadilla, 2 black bean tostadas, 2 chicken taquitos with green rice and black beans and as an extra side, one of the ‘Street food specials’ chicken wings a la mojo.
The meal arrived like Speedy Gonzales and I don’t know where to begin with how amazing it all was – freshly flavoured and well spiced. If I had one word of criticism it would be that the chicken inside the taquitos was a little dry. The staff were super friendly and attentive especially our waiter, which by random coincidence I had met on a night bus several weeks earlier, but that’s a different story altogether.
Overall, Wahaca was a great dining experience and one that I won’t be forgetting easily, but I might have to remind myself again later this week, you know, just to help keep the memory alive.
