(image from Jubo) Korean Chicken Wings and Strips
More hipster chicken is winging its way to you. New on the scene is in the form of KFC – no, not that KFC, but Korean Fried Chicken. I recently went to a tasting session to see what the latest chick in town had to offer. Located inside the Bedroom Bar in Shoreditch, is Jubo (means ‘canteen’ in Korean). Jubo takes its inspiration from K-Town in New York and the street foods of Seoul in South Korea. As well as Korean Fried Chicken, they’re serving one of the other latest food trends, hirata, which are steamed buns filled with all sorts of goodies.
As it was a tasting session I had a pretty good go try of trying most of the things on the manageable menu. Here’s a teaser of it.
We were asked to give feedback, my main quips were; not enough contrast between the two chicken flavours, the pork filling is mean in the hirata bun, bread hard in the beef sub roll and again not enough filling. But, and this is a big BUT – the chicken wings is outstanding, especially the soy and garlic flavour – fabulously crunchy, sticky and sweet.
Overall the tweaks are minor and if sorted, Jubo makes for great place to grab a snack, along with some Korean beer, of course. It’s worth checking out for those soy and garlic chicken wings alone – it’s finger lickin’ good – oops wrong slogan.
Jubo is soft launching at the moment, the proper launch is 6th September and is open; Tuesday-Thursday: 6pm – 12am. Friday & Saturday: 7pm –1am.
